Chapter 6: Semantics: The
Study of Linguistic Meaning
第6章は、Semanticsです。Semanticsは意味論です。
第5章のSyntaxが決める文章の意味を越えて、言語は使われます。
たとえば、皮肉を言う時などです。もしも文法が言語を表現しようとするならば、
Semanticsも文法に含めて議論すべきだと思われます。
Vartieties
of Meaning
Linguistic meaning と Speaker
meaning が一致すると literally、一致しないと、nonliterally
意味を考えるときに、literally /
nonliterallyを考える必要がある。
たとえば、
"The
door is right behind you!"
と言った時に
literally的
には、「ドアはどこにありますか?」への答えの場合。Synatxの範囲内です。
Nonliterally的
には、けんかして、話者が「出ていけ!」という意味でこの文を言った場合。
Syntaxの範囲を越えています。
コミュニケーションでは、「空気が読める」ので、meaningが
literally nonliterallyなのかは
話者と聞き手の間で理解が成立します。

文法が言語を表そうとするならば、「意味」を扱う必要があり、必然的にSEMANTICSを
文法が含む必要性がでてきます。
では、「意味
Meaning」とは何でしょうか?
以下は
Meaningにたいするいくつかの過去の理論的な説明の試み。
(どれも完全ではありません。)
(D) The
Denotational Theory of
Meaning
固有名詞などのdenoteできるもの。以下はそのスローガン
(D) The meaning of
each espression is the (actual) object it denotes, its denotation.
(M) Mentalist Theories of
Meaning
(M) The meaning of each expression is the idea
(or ideas) associated with
that expression in the minds of
speakers.
Meaning as Images
Meaning as
Concepts
Meaningのproperties and
relations
E means_____.
E is meaningful.
E
is ambiguous
E is polysemous
E is anomalous
(nonsense).
E is redundant.
E and E' are
synonymous.
E and E' are homonymous.
E includes the meaning of
E'.
E and E' overlap in meaning
E and E' are
antonymous
E is conventionally used to ______.
Truth propertied and
relations
E is linguistically true (analytic).
E is
linguistically false (contradictory).
E enatils E'.
(限定する、含意する)
E semantically presupposes E'.
Character
and Contents: Semantic Minimalism
(a) I am here now.
↓
(b)
The person speaking is at the location of utterance at the time of utterance.
(Character分析)
↓
(c) If the person speaking is Sam, and the place of
utterance is Paris, and the time
of utterance is January 1, 2010, then the
content of the utterance of (a) is
"Sam is in Paris on January 1,
2010."
第6章は、全体的に難しい章です。
Chapter
7: Language Variation
Dialectなどの言語の多様性を扱います。
(1) You makin' sense, but you don' be
makin' sense.
この文は、文法的に間違いとされますが、地域によっては正しいそうです。
Tools are expensive
anymore.
標準アメリカ英語
SAE (Standard American
English)
Linguisticsでは、どのdialectも他のdaialectより正しい、よりベター、よりロジカル
ということはできません。複雑さも機能も優越つけがたいのです。
SAEが存在して、それが他の方言よりも優れているというのは、
a social attitude,
さらにいうと a language prejudiceが
作りだしたものです。
British
Americanの単語の違いの簡単なリスト
SAEの対極として ICE (Inner-City
English)が紹介される。
ICEは low-income ghettos in large urban areas of the
United
States
で話される。Be動詞が省略されるが、文法的な機能がSAEと言われるものに
対して劣っているとは言えない。
We on
tape.
But everybody not black.
Formal and
Informal Language Styles
いくつか例が示されます。
たとえば、Tag
-Controlled Deletion (Tagは付加疑問の部分)
You are getting pretty excited, aren't
you?
Informalな省略形は、以下はOK
Getting pretty excted, aren't
you?
でも以下はNG,。主語を消す場合は、助動詞を消すというルールに違反している。
Are getting pretty excited,
aren't you?
Lingua Francas, Pidgins, and
Creoles
Lingua
Francasは中世の地中海で貿易の必要性から、皆が話すようになった
一種の共通言語です。イタリア語で構成され、French,
Spanish, Greek and Arabicの
エレメントが混じって使われています。
ヨーロッパでは、Latinが a common
language rfor treatises on science and other
scholaryly subjectsに関する Lingua
Francasでした。
現在は、英語がLingua Francasとして使われています。
Pidginsの特徴
1. The pidgin has no native speakers but is
used as a medium of communication
between people who are native speakers of
other languages.
2. The pidgin is based on linguistic features of one or more
other languages
and is a simplified language with reduced vocabulary and
grammatical structure.
Creolesの特徴
環境により、子供たちがPidginを母国語として覚えることがあります。
それがCreolesとなります。
When
a pidgin begins to acquire native speakers who use it as their primary language,
it greatly expands in vocabulary and grammatical
complexity.
Jargon
専門の人々の間で使われるもの。
Physicians and health
professionals use medical jargon, lawyers use legal jargon
Slang and Taboo Language
Damn!
Shit!など
Code Switching and Borrowing
会話の中でするフォーマルとインフォーマルの、switching
英語の中にスペイン語などの単語を混ぜる、Borrowing
Conclusion
Human language is a highly structured
system within which
an enormous amount of flexibility or creativity is
possible.
Chapter 8: Language Change
言語の歴史的変化を扱います。
人類の言語の起源はどこまで歴史をさかのぼるのでしょうか?
人類のTOOLの変化・開発は約10万年前から発生しています。
一方、文字の記録の歴史は、約6000年ぐらいまでしか遡れません。
この第6版から、現代人が約60,000年前にアフリカを出て世界に散らばって
行ったことを載せ、言語との関係を探ろうとしています。
英語はIndo-European
Language
FamilyのGermanicに属します。
Germanicの仲間は、以下です。
English
German
Dutch
Flemish
Swedich
Danish
Norwegian
Icelandic
English
Latin Greek
Sanskrit
ten decem deka
dasa
two
duo duo
dva
英語の歴史は、以下の区別があります。
Old English 5から11世紀
Middle
English 11から15世紀
Modern English 15世紀から現代
Middle
Englishの期間に英語の発音は大きな変化を受けます。
The Great Vowel
Shiftと言われる出来事は、英語のスペルと
発音に大きなずれを作った、歴史上の残念な出来事です。
[e] --> [i]
feet[fe:t] --> feet[fi:t]
[o] --> [u] mood[mo:d] -->
[mu:d]
[i] --> [ai] five[faiv]
[u] -->
[au] tune[tu:n] --> town[taun]
[ae] --> [ei] mate[maet]
--> mate[meit]
[c] --> [ou] goat[gc
t]
--> goat[gout]
Syntactic Change:
Auxiliary Verbs versus Main Verbs
Shakespeareの作品までは、助動詞を使わずに、メイン動詞が否定の
not
を使えました。
I deny it not. --> I don't deny
it.(現代)
英語の歴史は以下の本「An Adventure of
english」が面白いので紹介します。
この第8章を読むよりも、おもしろく読めて、ためになります。
